The Dating Safety Awkward Conversation Guide

Should I tell my date that I researched them and found red flags?

What should I advise my KIDS/PARENTS/CO-WORKERS/FRIENDS to do if they found red flags in their research?

Is your date worth having this type of communication?

Are you ready to say NEXT?

In this week’s blog post, we want to let you know about our new resource: The Dating Safety Awkward Conversation Guide. Once we thought through to the end (the end being: you now either have learned to do expert online research yourself or have asked us to do the research for you), we thought, what next? What if the reports indicate a major red flag? Should you discuss it with your date? What does that conversation look like?

So, we created this Guide. It’s too long to include the entire doc here, so we decided to add a brief excerpt and then a way for you to read and download the entire Guide! As, always, let us know your thoughts, ideas, experiences, and input!

This brief excerpt from The Dating Safety Awkward Conversation Guide is one of the role-playing scenarios included in the Guide.

Scenario: Anger and Potential Violence When You Tell Your Date You Researched Them.

Maya: "Hey Brandon, there's something I wanted to talk about regarding our last date. When you mentioned your past career change, I ran a background check out of curiosity and found something I wanted to understand better."

Brandon: "You ran a background check on me?! Who the hell gave you the right to do that?"

Maya: "It was just to be safe, Brandon, and it’s something I routinely do with someone new that I’m dating. I found some things in your report that worried me."

Brandon: "Safe? You're the one who's not playing it safe by snooping around in my life!"

Maya: "Brandon, I’d love to talk about this rationally."

Brandon: (shouting) "Talk? Rational? There's nothing rational about invading someone's privacy like that! You should be ashamed of yourself!"

Maya: (frightened) "Okay, okay, I understand. Just let's not raise our voices."

Outcome: The revelation of the background check triggers anger and raises concerns about potential violence, making it crucial to prioritize safety and avoid escalation. This is one of many reasons to have a realistic exit plan in place.
