Report to the affected Financial or Crypto Institution
If the scam involves monetary loss, contact the institution involved. Time is of the essence when it comes to this type of notification. Sometimes, institutions have a dollar limit to the amount of funds released to the scammer during each 24-hour period. The quicker you report this, the quicker the institution can respond and hopefully recover some of your stolen funds.

Example: Say that your monetary loss involves an account at Chase Bank. For additional information, you could call them or visit a branch to make a report. You could also go to their website at https://www.chase.com/digital/resources/privacy-security/security/report-fraud

REPORT TO LAW ENFORCEMENT –
State and Local

Each state and local government has different reporting protocols. You will need to do a Google search to locate the correct information.

Below is an example:
If you decide to report to state or local authorities, focus on the state, county, and city you are in. Say you live in Kansas City, Missouri. You want to research how to report a crime to the State of Missouri, Jackson County, and Kansas City.

  1. My first Google search is for the Missouri Attorney General’s Office. Each state has an Attorney General office that receives complaints from its constituents. https://ago.mo.gov/ is the site for the Missouri Attorney General’s Office. Their home page has a link that makes it easy to submit a complaint.

  2. Next, in this example, I do a search at the county level for the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office. When I find no instructions for reporting a crime, my next step is to contact the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office by phone to ask their protocol for reporting a crime.

  3. Next, in this example, I do a search at the city level for how to file a report in Kansas City, Missouri, and locate this site: https://www.kcmo.gov/city-hall/311. When you hover on the “I Want To …”, you immediately see the Report a crime link where you can report your situation.
